A to Z x “Pilot”.
Pilots are tricky to pull off, but A to Z, starring Ben Feldman and Cristin Milioti (Andrew and Zelda), succeeds in spite of some over sentimentality as it uses the expository sitcom format to introduce us to our setting, premise, and characters fluidly. The first episode rests on the charms and interest in our leads and works by packaging a conventional yet interesting romance with an amusing supporting cast and cutesy premise. It’s an entertaining package aiming to tell the entire history of a relationship from beginning to end.
It’s a relief how well DFA1979 has aged and evolved while moving on from such a distinct, well-loved sound. While the lyrical substance isn’t as hefty, the progressive beats are as the record gets better and more comfortable with every play.
